Step 1: Choose your work permit
The type of work permit you apply for depends on the nature of your work. As mentioned earlier, there are 2 types of work visas:
Employer Specific Work Permit – This allows you to work within the specified specifications, including your job approval specification, your employer name, length of work permit and your job location
For example, if you are an international student and have recently completed your qualification at a DIL (designated educational institution) in Canada and you want to apply for residency in Canada through the Postgraduate Work Permit Program, a free work permit will go a long way. This allows you to live and work anywhere in Canada and gain sufficient Canadian
work experience to apply for permanent residence.
For example, if you are in agriculture, your employer will need a specific work permit because you will only be able to work for a specific company in a specific province or region.
Step 2: Check your qualifications
There are a number of requirements that must be met in order to be considered eligible to live and work in Canada. To apply for a work permit you must:
You will be able to prove that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires;
There is evidence of funding to help you and your family members stay in Canada and return to the country;
Has a clear criminal record;
Stay in good health (you may need to have a medical examination); And
Make sure your employer is qualified to hire you (you may need an LMIA to apply); And.
Step 3: Submit your application
The best way to apply for your Canadian work permit is online. This way you can avoid any courier fees and significantly reduce your application time. You can avoid any delays, especially if additional supporting documentation is requested. It also ensures that your application is complete.
Processing times vary depending on your country of origin and can be anywhere from 2 to 33 weeks.
However, it is important to note that if you use an authorized RCIC, your processing time may be reduced because it indicates that your documents have already been verified.
However, processing times may also be delayed if you do not submit a complete application. An incomplete submission will often come back and you may have to attend an interview with officials in your own country or re-submit your application with additional supporting documentation.
